UITP and Messe Karlsruhe organise regular E-Market Updates with leading industry players. The public transport industry is striving to recover from the impact of COVID-19 on services and passenger numbers. All transport agencies are implementing different strategies to bring back lost passenger numbers while ensuring safe travel for passengers. Public transport operators are planning various marketing campaigns to rebuild passenger confidence. Organizations are also testing a variety of tools using AI, Big Data and complex algorithms to deliver customer experiences and services, including loyalty programs, customer service robots and chat bots, real-time passenger information and seamless payment options. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) describes the new approach in the transport sector: the public transport of the future is designed to be customer-friendly, safe and efficient. The focus is on the customer and his desire to reach his destination quickly and as directly as possible. Digital change has changed our everyday lives significantly and public transport operators are also faced with the challenge of dealing with low passenger numbers and changing demand patterns. As public transport is individual, needs-based and mostly short-term, many cities are looking for innovative solutions to optimize their services and minimize their operating costs. Even for the post COVID-19 period, they want to create flexible and direct service lines in the city by developing internal solutions or working with others.

The fourth E-Market Update on July 22nd will showcase some case studies from around the world and introduce some of the on-demand mobility solutions for operators.

Exhibition and congress location Karlsruhe sees a ray of hope

The event industry in Baden-Württemberg had to wait a long time for a regulation on the organisation of trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses. Now it has been initiated by the state government and sets comprehensible guidelines for the event industry.

The Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, Britta Wirtz, announced: "We read the present Corona Regulation for trade fairs in such a way that the state government is hereby providing guidance in the form of concrete instructions for action. It can be seen that the formulated requirements are aimed at getting business going again." Many of the provisions of the Corona Ordinance for trade fairs will already be repealed at the end of August and are therefore to be revised at the beginning of September. Wirtz continues: "For us and the entire trade fair and congress industry, the regulation can thus be seen as a bridge into the autumn, which both we and our exhibitors and visitors urgently needed. We can assume that the formulated requirements will only be tightened up in justified cases. In positive cases, the regulation will provide scope for relief from September onwards. We are now approaching the responsible regulatory authorities with concepts tailored to the Corona Ordinance trade fairs and our safety and hygiene concepts, and are thus in a position to make progress with planning for our autumn event".

Winner of the Future Mobility Award 2020 is the start-up company BeeSonix from Berlin, which was announced at the virtual award ceremony on 19 May 2020. For the first time, the award honours young companies and their concepts for sustainable mobility solutions for public transport.

The initiators of the award are the German trade journal Nahverkehrs-praxis, the Automotive Engineering Network aen, Messe Karlsruhe and the Economic Development Department of the City of Karlsruhe. "With the award, we would like to offer innovative ideas a platform at IT-TRANS, so that they become visible and receive the attention they deserve," says Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe.

While waiting on the platform, relevant information appears on passengers' smartphones as if by magic. The founders of the start-up company BeeSonix, which enables ultrasonic communication between journey announcements and travellers’ mobile terminals, implemented this. Keyword "silent announcements": The visionaries of BeeSonix use sound files that contain sounds in the ultrasonic range. In this way, the usual announcements are used to convey additional information with added value. Therefore, travel information can be played out precisely, stops and vehicles take the next digital step, without the need for new hardware. In the lecture on “IT Standardization in Public Transport: Blessing or Curse?” at 10:30 am on Thursday, 5 March in Market Update A Reinhard Laing, EMEA Director of Engineering and Project Management, will explain how Luminator is using public standards to facilitate the interoperability of on-board, wayside and back-office IT systems, increasing profitability and reducing friction.

The Papercast solar powered e-paper passenger information display system has been developed specifically to help public transport providers to achieve this goal. The displays can be easily installed within hours, allowing transport authorities to provide real-time bus arrivals and other service information to passengers at bus stops where it previously would not have been feasible. Papercast displays are controlled remotely by a sophisticated cloud-based management system which offers simple integration with open data standards such as GTFS and SIRI, as well as the ability to manage every display, including content updates, monitoring and diagnostics.

Papercast will also showcase its redesigned solar power modules, as well as a brand new 9.7” display for the very first time.

Intuitive apps and big data solutions for public transport based on cloud technology and SaaS

Under the motto "Process Support - Analysis - Reporting - Basis for Decision Making", Railcloud9 will provide modern smartphone, tablet and web apps for mobility and lean work and information processes (e.g. mobile document management, logbook, checklists) as well as data and context-based analysis and evaluation tools (e.g. quality and transport contract evaluations, PZB and speed data analysis, energy consumption forecasts).

In joint cooperation between IT professionals, public transport experts and "railwaymen", process- and area-oriented solutions have been developed with the Railcloud9 product lines "RailBox-Apps" and "Business Analytics": Meaningful additions and investment security through integration into existing IT and software landscapes, scalable cloud platform and standardized BI technology.

Smart software for automatic passenger counting

The hardware has been re-developed and features increased storage and calculating performance, while retaining the robust and proven time-of-flight (TOF) technology. The increased resolution of 80,000 pixels generates more intuitive and easily discernable video images (HD /TOF image streaming). These can be transmitted and/or recorded in 3D or 2D image streaming form (video). To allow more flexible mounting positions, the counting sensor was fitted with an advanced technical feature in lighting technology, enabling even larger mounting heights.

A user-friendly web interface with an online connection allows direct access to the system using a browser. In the development of the sixth generation of IRMA sensors, iris not only intends to expand the options of the technology, but also aims to create an intuitive product which shortens and facilitates all work steps on all levels of use.

Passenger flow analysis – a basis for revenue allocation

Statistically verified passenger volumes are an essential basis for planning capacity requirements of timetables and vehicle deployment timetable and for assigning revenue streams to the various transport companies and mobility service providers. For passenger flow analysis it is necessary to know the number of passengers boarding and alighting at the stops. As only some of the vehicles are fitted with sensors at the doors, total passenger volumes can only be determined using complex statistical extrapolations. The number of measurement runs (by vehicles fitted with sensors) must be adequate, and passenger volumes at different times and also for special events must be taken into account.

Contactless EMV payment systems

In public transport, the retail-like Known Fare Transaction (or Model 1) payment method enables passengers to know the exact amount being charged at the moment they present their card or smartphone to the reader. A further development of this is the Mass Transit Transaction, or Model 2. In this case, all the transactions are aggregated into a single batch and processed at the end of the day. In this way, passengers always get the best price. Lastly, Model 3 means using a bank card to validate a pre-purchased ticket. The Ridango Ticket Payment System (TPS) supports all payment models. Contactless payments require a high level of security so the TPS system is fully PCI-DSS-certified.

Monet+ from the Czech Republic is also presenting a public transport EMV tokenization solution called Switchio. This system is ready to use, easy to implement and compatible with various types of payment terminal. The architecture provides maximum flexibility and allows multiple purchasers to be connected and purchasers to be changed without reprogramming the terminal application.

When the passenger swipes out at the end of the journey a best price algorithm calculates the optimum ticket for that journey. Using advanced geo-location algorithms, the system computes the distance traveled, including any intermediate changes between rail, bus, subway, tram and boat. The app can be used across borders and includes fraud detection. The system is running across Switzerland covering all types of public transport and all 250 operators. It can also be used in Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein.

Calypso Networks Association (CNA) is presenting two projects at IT-TRANS: a free, open-source solution for contactless ticketing and a white paper with best-practice examples. This non-profit organization has developed Eclipse Keyple, an open-source SDK (Software Development Kit) and an API (Application Programming Interface) for contactless ticketing, available free of charge at www.keyple.org. The scalable Keyple software does not lock you into a specific ticketing system and turns complex ticketing systems development into a simple integration. Dedicated plugins ensure that ticket processing works with any hardware and is compatible with all transport and event management architectures.

A sophisticated 10-step-plausibility check ensures high quality data, rapid analysis and simple operation.

Data can be integrated in OPAL punctuality statistics and used in the SIM simulation application. Analytics tools offered within OPAL cover punctuality, connections, reporting, activity recording, management overview, rolling stock and timetable. With the help of SIM it is possible to verify a new timetable and present the effects of altered connections or construction sites.

The new desktop application analyzes general events such as partial or complete failures, journeys, cycles and arrival and departure discrepancies at stops. The software is non-proprietary.

It’s possible to search for and book rental bikes and tickets from the local transit agency (KVV) directly in the app. moovel also offers an on-demand platform for public transport so people have a true demand-oriented option for getting around at any time of the day or night. This platform can be used singularly or in combination with moovel transit. The service also features smart routing and pooling, creating efficient solutions for passengers and operators alike. At ITTRANS 2018 moovel tested an on-demand ride-sharing service together with KVV as a pilot project.

All Cityway solutions are open and can be integrated in any other open system modules via standardized APIs. Passengers can order by phone or book via the internet or an app. Transfer of the booking to the performing company can be customized to suit operating conditions. The mobile ticket printer offers ticket printing right in the vehicle. Integration of on-demand mobility in the existing public transport network is ensured by excluding parallel transport, linking connections and integrating tariffs, among other things. There are also interfaces to various timetable information systems, ITCS systems and taxi systems.

The upcoming conference and exhibition is the only event worldwide that focuses on both taxis and ride-hailing, while also dealing comprehensively with challenges and solutions that will concern the industry in the future.
