In public transport, many passengers travel to different destinations every day. In order to transform public transport from a necessity into a mobility experience, the SmartMMI project focuses on improving the information supply of passengers along their mobility chain. The industry and research partners combine a wide variety of data sources to form a smart public transport data platform and research ways to present the information to the passenger on semi-transparent displays (SmartWindows) and on personal mobile devices (Smartphones or Smartwatches).

The technical visit in the laboratory of ubiquitous mobility systems offers a great opportunity to get in touch with the project SmartMMI by interacting with our developed SmartWindow Prototype. We developed and constructed a mockup of a tram or train department for our lab. It comprises a 98-inch multi-touch monitor that simulates a SmartWindow in real public transport. Additionally, original train seats are installed on metal rails that enable us to change the distance between them. The seats can be installed facing in the same direction or facing each other. We also can replace them with folding seats in several orientations. That way we can reconstruct different vehicle configurations and create situations in public transport vehicles for the evaluation of smartphone applications, for example.

The window consists of a plastic plane that can be used as information device by projecting images on it using a short throw beamer. The floor is currently being outfitted with original floor covering and we are enhancing our mockup further using original signage.

The visitors will be able to evaluate the latest designs and interaction concepts by sitting into our mockup and interact with the interactive HTMS prototype of a SmartWindow design for public transport. The group will be offered to try themselves as probands in one of our evaluation study. Participating in our user study, the group will be able to feel like a participant and provide feedback using our mockup. More specifically, by interacting with the developed Prototype, the probands will discover the interaction areas of a sitting passenger on the SmartWindow as shown in figure 3. Using new technologies like eye-tracking we will be able track users field of vision and attentions as shown in figure 4. We are convinced that it can improve lab studies in public transport settings by providing context of use, while being more cost efficient and controllable than field tests.
